Pine Maximum Latewood Density in Semi‐Arid Northern China Records Hydroclimate Rather Than Temperature

چکیده
Long records of tree-ring maximum latewood density (MXD) measurements in conifers have been successfully employed to reconstruct summer temperature changes globally. Yet, the potential MXD as a proxy semi-arid, low-latitude regions for reconstructing either or hydroclimate variability remains largely unexplored. Here, we developed data set Chinese pine from semi-arid northern China, and investigated its sensitivity different climate variables. We found that annual self-calibrated Palmer Drought Severity Index previous August current July displays strongest influence on variation. The entire chronology (covering 1736–2020) is highly consistent with nearby tree-ring-based precipitation drought reconstructions at decadal timescales, confirming temporally stable signal our record. In particular, rapid wetting trend during 2010–2020 period well captured by data. This novel study has wide implications future use past

Earlywood and latewood elastic properties in loblolly pine
The elastic properties of earlywood and latewood and their variability were measured in 388 specimens from six loblolly pine trees in a commercial plantation. Properties measured included longitudinal modulus of elasticity, shear modulus, specific gravity, microfibril angle and presence of compression wood. Novel testing procedures were developed to measure properties from specimens of 1 mm=1 m...
متن کاملMaximum temperature accounts for annual soil CO2 efflux in temperate forests of Northern China
It will help understand the representation legality of soil temperature to explore the correlations of soil respiration with variant properties of soil temperature. Soil temperature at 10 cm depth was hourly logged through twelve months. Basing on the measured soil temperature, soil respiration at different temporal scales were calculated using empirical functions for temperate forests. On mont...
متن کاملModeling the Potential of the Northern China Forest Shelterbelt in Improving Hydroclimate Conditions
The forest shelterbelt (afforestation) project in northern China is the most significant ecosystem project initiated in China during the past three decades. It aims to improve and conserve the ecological environment in the project areas. The tree belt stands along the southern edge of the sandy lands, nearly paralleling to the Great Wall. This study used a regional climate model to simulate the...
متن کاملCorrelation between maximum latewood density of annual tree rings and NDVI based estimates of forest productivity
In boreal conifers, maximum latewood density (MXD) of annual rings varies in response to warm-season temperatures. Vegetation productivity can be estimated using the Normalized-DiŒerence Vegetation Index (NDVI) calculated from satellite sensor data. Ground measurements related to productivity are required in order to evaluate these estimates. MXD from three boreal sites was compared with estima...
متن کاملEarlywood and Latewood Stable Carbon and Oxygen Isotope Variations in Two Pine Species in Southwestern China during the Recent Decades
Stable isotopes in wood cellulose of tree rings provide a high-resolution record of environmental conditions, yet intra-annual analysis of carbon and oxygen isotopes and their associations with physiological responses to seasonal environmental changes are still lacking. We analyzed tree-ring stable carbon (δ13C) and oxygen (δ18O) isotope variations in the earlywood (EW) and latewood (LW) of pin...
